Peter was born in Germany probably in April of 1874. Precious little is known about Peter Gebert. According to the passenger manifest,
Peter was 19 years old on February 20, 1893.i.2 He was listed after
the family indicating that he was probably considered an adult and had to pay
adult passage. His occupation was listed as laborer whereas his siblings were
all listed as child.
The Taufin Registerd.5 does not show Peter probably because he was born in another place in Germany. His younger sister, Katharina, was indicated in the register as the third child of the marriage, but was the earliest child of Ulrich and Magda listed in that book which started the listing in 1861. Thus, it's reasonable to assume he and another child were born elsewhere.
Katharina and Charles' entries showed that their father was a citizen of Rammersweier. A Baptismal listing for Peter was not found in the register at the family church in Rammersweier.
Alma Gebert's family tree has an 'S' by the Peter's name where others had indications of male and female children.k.3 Pat Gebert of the Danbury Henry Geberts remembered being Uncle Peter's favorite but it didn't last as he died when she was quite young. When Pat was a very small child, most of the surviving neices and nephews weren't even born yet which explains their lack of memories about him. Jeanne Gebert of the George Gebert line and the widow of his Brooklyn nephew's widow, remembers hearing that Peter was a drinker. There may be validity in that as he was listed as a bartender in the 1900 census.
An 1897 Brooklyn city directoryg.24 shows:
Magdaline, wid. Ulrich, h 170 Met av
Gebert, Peter, lab. h 170 Met av
The 1900 census showed Peter still living with his mother and siblings. At that time he was 26 years old having been born in April of 1874, German-born like his parents, an alien, fully employed for the prior year and read, wrote, and spoke English. j.10
There was no Peter resembling the above descriptions in the 1910 New York City census index or the 1920 New York or Connecticut census soundexesj.1,j.4,j.6. He was also not found in the New York, New Jersey or Connecticut soundexes for the NARA Immigration and Naturalization Records.h.1,h.2,h.3
Tom Furlong was able to locate grave site information for Peter from Holy Trinity Cemetery's
office. That record shows that in Block 80, Row 9, Grave 14 three people were
buried:
