Agnes Normore Kavanagh

Gregrory II's third child and first daughter, Agnes, married James Kavanagh the first Kavanagh to settle at Bell Island.1 James came from County Wexford, Ireland. Their marriage at Holy Rosary RC Church at Portugal Cove on July 4 or 6, 181345 was witnessed by Ben Squires and Anne Oates.1

  1. John Kavanagh was baptised on June 24, 1817 at the Basilica in St. Johns. His sponsors were James Simmons and Mary Oats.44 He married Catherine Shelly1 at Holy Rosary RC Church in Portugal Cove on November 19, 1855.
    2. Sponsors were Edward Bennet and Johanna Keough.45
    1. James was born in 1856.1 On July 26, 1856, an entry was made in the register of the Holy Rosary RC Church at Portugal Cove that their son, James, was baptised. The family was living on Bell Isle and the sponsors were Thomas Power and Mary Jackman.45

  3. Ellen Kavanagh was baptised on February 3, 1831 in St. John's Basilica. [Record was marked paid.] Her sponsors were James Keat and Alice Dwyer.45 According to Hammond, she married William Fitzgerald.1
  4. Robert Kavanagh was born in 18341 and baptised on May 24th, 1834 at St. John's Basilica. His sponsors were John Ryan and Catherine Fitzgerald. [Record was marked not paid.]45 According to Hammond, he died in 1878.1 Also according to Hammond, he married Sara Fitzgerald who was born in 1839 and died in 1931.1
    1. Martin J. Kavanagh was born in 1871 and died in 1963. He married Mary Joseph Fitzgerald who was born in 1877 and died in 1956.1

    3. Ann Kavanagh was born in 1863 and married Thomas Crock.1She was baptised at Holy Rosary RC Church at Portugal Cove on February 25, 1863. Her sponsors were Peter Fitzgerald and Margaret Fitzgerald.45
    4. Mary Joseph Kavanagh was born in 1866 and married William Jackman.1
    5. Frances Kavanagh married Edward Butler.1
    6. Margaret Kavanagh married Richard Lahey.1
    7. Agnes Kavanagh married Peter Quigley.1 She was baptised at Holy Rosary RC Church at Portugal Cove on November 10, 1864. Her sponsors were Thomas Cavaghne? and Johanna Fitzgerald.45

  5. Edward Kavanagh who was baptised on the 15th of February in 1837 at St. John's Basilica and was sponsored by Martin Redmond and Mary Jackman.45 According to Hammond, he married Mary Connors.1

  6. Thomas Kavanagh was born in 1839 and died in 1903. He married Mary Bridget Harvey who was born in 1841 and died in 1905.1  Their wedding was recorded at Holy Rosary RC Church in Portugal Cove, NF on January 23, 1865. Witnesses were Marchall White and Mary Nessy.45
    1. Agnes Kavanagh was born in 1867.1 She was baptised  in Holy Rosary RC Church in Portugal Cove on September 29?, 1857. Her sponsors were William Harvey and Mrs. Robert Cavanagh who was probably her aunt, Sara Fitzgerald Kavanagh.45
    2. John Kavanagh was born in 1866.1 He was baptised  in Holy Rosary RC Church in Portugal Cove on March 22, 1866. His sponsors were Mr. and Mrs. John Harvey.45

    3. Thomas Kavanagh was born in 18791 or August 187823 and died in 1972.1 His wife Mary Brazil was born in 18841 or Aug. 188323 in Spaniards Bay and died in 1941.1

    4. Mary Ann Kavanagh was born in 1870 and died in 1972.1  She was baptised  in Holy Rosary RC Church in Portugal Cove on February 20, 1870. Her sponsors were Mr. & Mrs. Edward Cavanagh who were probably her aunt and uncle.45 She married Luke Delanhausy[sp?].1
    5. Frances Kavanagh was baptised in Holy Rosary RC Church in Portugal Cove on August 23, 1874. Her sponsors were James Redmond and Catherine Bowden.45 She married a Mr. McCarthy.1 
    6. William Kavanagh was born in 1878 and died in 1957. His first wife was Helen Russell.1

    7. James Francis Kavanagh was born in 18721 and was baptised in Holy Rosary RC Church in Portugal Cove on April 16, 1872. His sponsors were Patrick Kelley and Catherine Normore.45

  8. Patrick Kavanagh1 married Ellen Kelly1 who was born in Ireland.16 The wedding was at Holy Rosary RC Church at Portugal Cove on May 7, 1846. Sponsors were Mathew Jackman and Margaret Fitzgerald.45 Their children were:
    1. John Kavanagh was born in 1846 according to Hammond.1 The register at Holy Rosary RC Church at Portugal Cove indicated he was baptised on September 12, 1847 and did not note that he was other than a newborn. His sponsors were Michael Keogh and Anne? Fitzgerald.45
    2. James Joseph Kavanagh was born in 18501 according to Hammond. The register at Holy Rosary RC Church at Portugal Cove indicated he was baptised on July ?4, 1850. His sponsors were Thomas Colihan and Mary Perl. The family was living on Belle Isle at the time.45
    3. Agnes Kavanagh was born in 18521 and Baptised on August 15, 185215 by Rev. Thomas O'Connor of Holy Rosary Parish in Portugal Cove, NF. The family was living on Belle Isle at the time. The sponsors were William Fitzgerald and Bridget Brown.45 Agnes died in Boston, MA on May 19, 1918.16 She married Joseph T. Furlong on November 3, 188113 in St. John's Parish, St. John's, NF. According to his death certificate, he was born in St. John's and died in Boston, MA on December 12, 1922.17 Both were buried in New Calvary Cemetery in Boston but there is no headstone marking the grave. While her husband arrived in Boston on the SS Austrian from Newfoundland on April 11, 1887, she didn't arrive until August 1st on the SS Worcester. He, and by default, his family, were naturalized in December 1899.
      1. Thomas John Furlong was born on July 2, 1881 or 1882 in St. John's, NF and was baptised by Rev. P. J. Delaney in St. John's Parish.18 His sponsors were James Cooke and Susanna Gallishaw. Tom married Almira Gertrude Kelly in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Brooklyn, NY on February 5, 1910 and died there on June 13, 1944.19 Tom's pictured above right with his son, James Kane, about 1941.
      2. Mary Ellen Furlong was born on April 7, 188418 and baptised by Rev. W. Forristall on April 9, 1884 in St. John's Parish, St. John's, NF, too. Her sponsors were Thomas McGrath and her aunt, Mary Frances Kavanagh. She was known to later generations of the family as Aunt Nell. Nell married a Mr. Feeley.22 Aunt Nell lived in Brooklyn, probably Ridgewood, at least from the 1930's to the 1960's and around 1935 they had grown children.22. She died in Florida in July of 1980.47
        1. Charles  Feeley drove an army tank in World War II and lost a leg in North Africa.22
        2. Victor Feeley had a bar in Florida called Feeley’s on the road to Key Largo probably during the 1970’s. His cousin James passed it on a vacation once not knowing it was Vic’s.22

        4. Johnny Feeley's twin died at birth. Johnny once came to Alma Furlong Gebert’s house in Baldwin as an appliance repairman. They soon realized they were cousins. Turned out he lived in nearby Bellmore.22.
      3. Joseph P. Furlong was born in 189420 in Boston, MA. He probably died in childhood as no surviving adults remember him.
      4. Margaret 'Peg' Furlong22 was born in Newfoundland in 1887. She married William Leo Pinero22 who was a city fireman and lived their lives in Boston, MA.22
        1. The picture at right shows Joseph Pinero Jr.22 on the Summer Street Bridge in South Boston near the Boston fish pier on August 28, 1938. He was very tall, at least 6'3" or so.22 An electrician, Joe was born on May 5, 1918, died a bachelor on Nov. 11, 1988 and buried with his grandfather in New Calvary cemetery.
        2. Mary Pinero was born in 1921, married Walter J. Shea in 1942, and is still living in Boston. She and her cousin Jim Furlong were pen pals in 1941.22

      5. Elizabeth Frances Aunt Lil Furlong was born in February 10, 188921 in Boston, MA. Lil22 married a Mr. Frederick?? Rudiger22 and lived in Ridgewood, Brooklyn, NY until the early 1940's. After becoming a widow, Lil moved to Caldwell or Hopewell, NJ with her daughter where she died in April 1958.22, 47
        1. Frederick Rudiger was buried in Section 20 Plot S Row 326 at age one month on December 6, 1924 in St. Johns Cemetery, Queens, NY. The owner of the plot was listed as Frederick Rudiger.
        2. Agnes Rudiger married and had children.22
        3. Tommy Rudiger was born about 1927, married and had children.22
        4. George Rudiger was born about 1929.22
    4. William Kavanagh was baptised on November 12, 1854 at Holy Rosary Parish in Portugal Cove, NF. His sponsors were Edmund Cavina[Cavanagh] and Anne Fitzpatrick.45
    5. Mary Frances Kavanagh was born on 2/1/18561,15 and Baptised on 12/2/1856 by Rev. Thomas O'Connor at Holy Rosary Parish in Portugal Cove, NF. The family was living on Belle Isle at the time. The sponsors were Simon Martin and Bridget Connors.15, 45
    6. Margaret Kavanagh was born in 18581 according to Hammond. The register at Holy Rosary Parish in Portugal Cove, NF, shows her baptised on May 1, 1859 with sponsors William Dwyer and Sara Fitzgerald. The family was living on Belle Isle at the time. It does not indicates that she wasn't a newborn. 45
    7. Elizabeth Kavanagh was born in 18611 She was baptised at Holy Rosary Parish in Portugal Cove, NF, on April 24, 1861 with sponsors John Fitzgerald and Honora Kelly.45
    8. Ellen Joseph Kavanagh was baptised on July 22, 1867 at Holy Trinity Parish in Torbay, NF. Her sponsors were Joseph Maher and Margaret Power.46
