Maybe you’ve heard of the new trend in food called Falafel? I’ve had a Falafel burger before and it was amazing! Well, this is not the same! These are not the standard falafel that you can find in any store or order in a restaurant. These are my Vegan Falafel and they are fantastic!
Falafel is a very popular Middle Eastern dish that has become a staple of many American fast food restaurants. It is also becoming a favorite of many American chefs and bakers. If you have had a falafel burger or falafel sandwich, then you know the flavor that they offer. The spice of the Middle Eastern dishes that you find in falafel is not found anywhere else. The flavor of Middle Eastern food is very unique and flavorful.
Most people think that falafel is made of ground chickpeas. This is true but not all falafel is made with these ingredients. The ingredients that I use are ground up, spiced lentils. The falafel that I make are just a little different than the ones you find in a restaurant. In this recipe I am using dried lentils that are ground up. You can add any spices and herbs that you would like to make the falafel spicy or flavorful.
In the recipe, you will notice that I mention using my homemade hummus as the dipping sauce for the falafel. This is because I wanted to make a homemade alternative to the store bought hummus. I have made my own hummus before and this recipe is very easy to make. You could easily make a batch of hummus for a whole week!
Don’t be intimidated by the huge list of ingredients. It is not too hard to make these falafel and you will be pleasantly surprised by how good they taste!
Vegan Falafel Recipe:
1 cup chickpeas (dried)
1 cup chickpea flour
2 tablespoons curry powder
1 teaspoon turmeric
2 tablespoons cumin powder
3 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon pepper
1 cup olive oil
3/4 cup water
1 green onion
1/2 cup or more lemon juice
Put all the ingredients in a blender and blend it until it becomes a paste.
Make the falafel balls by rolling the falafel paste into small balls and place on a tray.
Heat the oil in a frying pan and fry the balls until golden.
Meanwhile, make the houmous salad by mixing all the ingredients together.
Serve the falafel balls and houmous salad together.
Houmous Salad Recipe:
- 1 large tomato
- 1/4 cup of chopped cucumber
- 1/2 cup of chopped red onion
- 1/4 cup of chopped pickles
- 1/4 cup of chopped pineapple
- 1/4 cup of chopped avocado
- 1/4 cup of chopped red bell pepper
- 2 tbsp of extra virgin olive oil
- 1 tbsp of Dijon mustard
- 1 tbsp of cider vinegar
- 1/4 cup of plain Greek yogurt
- salt and pepper
- 2 cups of lettuce
- 1/2 cup of red grapes
- 1/4 cup of sunflower seeds
- 1/4 cup of pumpkin seeds
- 1/4 cup of walnuts
- 1/4 cup of sesame seeds
- Mix all the ingredients together in a big bowl.
- Make small squares with the mixture, and place on the lettuce leaves.
- Sprinkle with cheese and sunflower seeds.
